The truth is that most athletes don’t envision their careers being over at 22 or even 25 years old. Often times we go to college to play sports and we aren’t necessarily serious about leveraging the opportunity to get a quality education that will allow us to jump-start our career.
It can be extremely difficult to cope with the fact that your sport is over and it is not unusual to experience some levels of anxiety or depression. At times we don’t want to even be around the sport we once loved simply because it is too painful. Many former athletes turn to drugs and alcohol in an effort to medicate themselves and numb the pain and avoid the fact that it’s really over.
As athletes we create this persona. Many of us have nicknames and we literally transform into our alter ego on the court or field. Unfortunately many of us don’t take the time to get to know ourselves outside of our sport.
We talk about this and so much more on this week’s episode.
